Joanna Young Biography

Joanna Young’s executive career includes roles in technology and finance in both the private and public sector. She has senior level experience with domestic and international strategy and operations, including mergers & acquisitions. Ms. Young is very active in social media and has been named Top Social CIO for 4 years running; she is currently within the top 10. She is known for relentless focus on customer delight, delivering against all odds, turn-around situations, and fostering talent.

Ms. Young’s most recent assignment was CIO for Michigan State University, providing strategic management and vision to enable a digital campus that furthers the academic and research missions of MSU. She was accountable for all technology in all locations, including infrastructure, academic and research computing, administrative systems and grant and outreach activities. During her tenure, she created an IT strategy for the university, delivered a number of projects, and turned around a legacy, unreliable technology function. Young’s prior CIO assignment was at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) where she was accountable for applications and infrastructure supporting all university functions, including learning management systems, distance learning, student and advancement systems, university system enterprise services, networks, servers and data centers. Priorities included academic, advancement and research projects, cyber infrastructure, virtualization, project management practice implementation, increase in revenue through grant funding and market expansion, and design of technology-enabled academic and conference facilities. She was also the Associate Vice President for Finance, accountable for budgeting and finance for 21 academic and administrative units. At UNH, she led the largest federal grant in UNH history, a major cyber infrastructure expansion across the University System of New Hampshire and all 10 New Hampshire counties. Prior to UNH and MSU, she worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, attaining the position of CIO for Corporate Systems after two decades of increasing roles and responsibilities.
